After a classically turbulent beginning in various London studios, I was lucky enough to spend much of my 20s working with Alan Moulder. Somewhat ironically, only after I took the job did I realise the sheer extent of his work that had already influenced me in my formative years, so it was a pretty good spot to cut my teeth in. I’ve since been fortunate enough to work with a great many artists and bands, and am still fascinated by how much working on other people’s music can teach you about life, and people.
Now based between London and West Wales, mainly working from Battery Studios in Willesden (and wherever else in the world makes sense for the record), I work across producing, engineering and mixing, from projects with Queens of the Stone Age, Yves Tumor & PinkPantheress to more independent work with Hank Bee, Sam Akpro & Trout. An ‘obligatory highlight’ is Wet Leg’s moisturizer, which was nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Alternative Music Album, and their song mangetout for Best Alternative Music Performance — oh, the accolades... gross.
I tend to work on the principle of “it felt right at the time”. Obviously, there are a million ways to make a record, and I’m mainly interested in finding the one that feels right for the song and artist. A big part of that is making sure the emotion is coming through in the right way, although quite how you get there is usually up for debate. Sometimes it’s something to do with the arrangement, sometimes a sound or a performance, and occasionally it’s best to leave it well alone and keep my prying hands out of it. I like figuring all those things out together, and seeing where the music takes you, but after all, it’s your music, not mine.
I’ve a soft spot for anything with a bit of character to it, regardless of genre or budget. One thing’s for sure, I will get emotionally attached to that one particular bum note or bit of noise, but I’ll do my best to put my ego aside for the sake of the song. Usually…
